Papua New Guinea Centre for Judicial Excellence attends Training-of Trainers Workshop

The Papua New Guinea Centre for Judicial Excellence (PngCJE) and the Pacific Judicial Strengthening Initiative (PJSI) hosted a Training-of-Trainers Workshop from 4-8 March 2019 at the Grand Papua Hotel. The workshop was opened by the Executive Director, Mr John Carey, and was attended by 17 staff members of the PngCJE, Magisterial Services and National Judicial Staff Services Corporate and Registry. The workshop was facilitated by PJSI Technical Director, Dr. Livingstone Armytage AM.

The PngCJE was established in 2010 under a Memorandum of Understanding entered into between the Chief Justice, Chief Magistrate and the Secretary for the Department of Justice and Attorney General with the aim of delivering structured training programs for Judges, Magistrates, Court officers and other officers of the Law and Justice Sector agencies that play a part in the Court process.

The objectives of the workshop were to build the PngCJE's capacity to manage and deliver judicial training, to develop presentation skills in applying effective techniques of adult learning and introduce staff to PJSI's Trainers' Toolkit.

The PngCJE team received training in the assessment, design, delivery and evaluation of ongoing judicial and court development activities. Topics covered included cirriculum and session planning, publications, presentation techniques, data analysis and monitoring and evaluation strategies.

The workshop was highly interactive and included demonstrations and practical exercises. It is one of the many workshops facilitated by the Pacific Judicial Strengthening Initiative within the Pacific. Ms. Arabella Owen, Program Officer for the Law and Justice Sector for PngCJE stated, "This has been an enlightening workshop that has provided me with a better understanding in how to operate and deliver Judicial Education and Training". The attendees were enthusiastic about the training opportunity.

"I am able to do Training Needs Assessments which will assist in Cirriculum Design for workshops and training that we facilitate" says Mr. Gitu Lago, Finance Manager for PngCJE. "With this type of exposure to international best practices in how to conduct training in Judicial Education inclusive of developing Bench Books, I am more confident in my ability to develop on the mandate of the PngCJE" says Ms. Debbie Laudiwana, Research and Publications Manager for PngCJE.

The initiative is funded by New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade which has supported and promotes the rule of law across the Pacific.
